Chargers Overcome 3-Game Skid with Win Over Golden West

Huntington Beach, CA -- The Chargers headed to Golden West looking to snap their 3-game losing skid and get back in the win column. They did just that as they controlled the game from the first run scored and held back a Rustler rally in the final innings to win, 6-5.

With one out in the top of the 2nd, Matt Tietz scored the opening run of the game after a wild pitch by Golden West.

They went up 2-0 in the top of the 4th after Brandon Oliver hit an RBI single that drove in Kramer Ferrell from third.

The Chargers then added to the lead in the top of the 6th with one out when Matt Tietz hit a single that scored Brandon Brintz from third. An error on that same play by the Golden West third baseman allowed Joe Duffin, who had advanced from first to third, to score and Tietz was able to advance safely to third.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Rustlers got on the board with two runs to cut the Cypress lead to 5-2.

With one out in the top of the 7th, the Chargers were able to score another run after a fielders choice on a Brandon Brintz infield hit that allowed him to make it to first and scored Jack Flansburg from third.

Golden West was able to add a run in the bottom of the 7th and again in the bottom of the 8th, however that's as long as the Golden West rally lasted and Cypress held onto win, 6-5.

In getting the win for the Chargers, Matt Esparza pitched 5 innings, throwing eight strikeouts and allowing two hits. Nathan Kuchta relieved Esparza and threw 2 2/3 innings, throwing three strikeouts. Payton Lobdell closed out the game for the Chargers throwing the final 1 1/3 innings.

The win improves the Chargers conference record to 2-3 and their overall record to 11-7.

They will be back in action to face Saddleback at home this Tuesday (3/11) at 2pm.
