Baseball goes 1-1 at Hancock Tournament

Santa Maria, CA -- The Charger baseball team traveled to play in the Hancock Tournament during their spring break week and split a pair of games. The first was a loss to Cuesta, 4-6 and the second was a victory over Canyons, 3-2.

In the first game Cuesta got on the board early with a 2-run 2nd inning. In the 4th inning for Cypress, Joe Duffin hit an RBI single that scored Matt Tietz from third. A few batters later, with the bases loaded, Brock Eissman was walked which brought home Duffin from third. Connor Fraser then hit an RBI single to bring home Kramer Farrell from third and give the Chargers a 3-2 lead.

The Cougars came back in the bottom of the 4th to score 2 runs of their own and take back the lead 4-3. In the 6th they increased their lead with another 2 runs, 6-3. Cypress was only able to score one more run in the top of the 8th to bring the score to 6-4 when Joe Van Marter hit a sacrifice fly to center field, which scored Ferrell from third. The Cougars held Cypress scoreless from that point and went on to claim the win.

Getting the loss on the mound for the Chargers was Payton Lobell.

The next day against Canyons the game remained scoreless until the bottom of the 6th when Duffin hit an RBI single to bring in Trevor Meleski for the score and a 1-0 lead. Canyons then tied it up at 1-1 with a run in the top of the 7th.

In the top of the 8th the Cougars went up 2-1 after scoring just one run. Cypress answered in the bottom of the 8th when Duffin scored from third on a fielders choice by Kramer Ferrell. Later in the inning Trevor Meleski scored from third on a passed ball to take the lead 3-2. After the top of the 9th and with the lead, the game went final in favor of Cypress.

Ryan Hartman is credited with the win on the mound for the Chargers.

The Chargers have only two regular season games remaining against Santa Ana College. They will play the Dons away this Tuesday (4/22) and at home Thursday (4/24). First pitch for both games will be at 2pm.
