Chargers take it to the Gauchos

Cypress, CA - Under cloudy skies and in front of an enthusiastic crowd, the Charger's Women's Soccer Team (2-2-1) won their first conference game of the season against the Saddleback Gacuchos. It was the first home game for the Chargers after opening up on the road with games in Ventura, Foothill and San Francisco.

The Chargers took control of the ball early and rarely let the Guachos past the midfield stripe during the first half. Elizabeth Gutierrez found the back of the net in the forty-third minute after the Gauchos goalkeeper fell to the ground trying to block a previous shot. Charger Kylie Redmond is credited with the assist on the goal.

Early in the second, the Gauchos came close to tying it up on a clear shot from 15 yards out but Charger goalkeeper Chloe Sutkowski made the save to preserve the shutout. Throughout the game the Charger defense looked impressive as multiple Charger players came through to block potential Gaucho shots.

In the thirty-seventh minute Elizabeth Gutierrez was handed out a yellow-card and then again in the thirty-ninth minute Charger teammate Kimberly Gonzalez was also given a yellow card.

The Charger defense held strong in the final minutes as Saddleback tried to advance the ball to score but were unable to do so. The Chargers finished the game with five shots on goal compared to only one for the Guachos.

The Gauchos improve to 2-2-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play. Next week the Chargers look for their next conference win as they host Orange Coast College at Ray Haas field on Tuesday, September 24. Game time will be at 3 p.m.
