Chargers Come From Behind to Claim OT Victory
Cypress picks up second conference victory.
Fullerton, CA. -- Cypress went on the road for a match-up against conference rival Fullerton and managed to escape out of the "Hornets Nest" with their second conference victory of the season, 82-80.
At the half the Chargers trailed Fullerton 38-32. They had only shot 38% from the field while the Hornets were shooting 47%. In the second half however, that reversed and Cypress went 12-26 from the floor to go 46% from the floor while Fullerton went 14-36 for 36%.
Cypress never held the lead during regulation and a few times in the second half were down by as much as ten points.
David Gonzalez scored the last five points for the Chargers to end regulation, including two clutch free throws with only :17 second left to tie the game at 72-72 and put the game into overtime.
The Chargers did not end up taking the lead from Fullerton until :52 seconds remained in overtime when Jerred Cook made a jump shot to put the score at 81-80 Cypress. Robby Weaver was then fouled and sent to the line with :25 seconds to go where he missed the first and made the second to extend the score slightly to 82-80. Fullerton went on to miss a 3-pt basket on the other end and a Mark Townes rebound sealed the second conference win of the season for Cypress.
Daivd Gonzalez scored 32 points for the Chargers while grabbing six rebounds. With four games remaining on the schedule, Gonzalez is on track to set a new Cypress single season scoring average record at 21.7 ppg. The current record is held Tyrone Branyon (1975-76) at 21.4ppg.
Jesse Henderson-Lewis also added 21 points for the Chargers while grabbing six rebounds. Jerred Cook chipped in with 13 points on the night and five assists.
The Chargers come home this Friday (2/7) to face Orange Coast at 7:30pm.
