
Chargers Drop Close Opening Game to San Diego Mesa
Despite fast start, Chargers are overcome in the second half.
Cypress, Calif. -- The Chargers opened up the Don Johnson Classic by hosting San Diego Mesa Thursday evening. Former Charger Coach and recent UCLA Hall of Fame inductee, Don Johnson, was in attendance and was honored at mid-court prior to the announcing of the starting line-ups.
The Chargers came into the game looking to start the season off right with a victory after last year's dissapointing struggles.
The Chargers opened up strong and at times held a 10 point advantage over the visiting Olympians. In the first half Charger G, David Gonzalez, was hot from behind the arc hitting four 3-pointers in a row. At the half the Chargers were up on Mesa by a score of 44-35.
After the half, Mesa came out strong and led a rally which overcame the Cypress lead. It was midway through the second half that Mesa took the lead from Cypress and never looked back. Cypress kept the Olympians fighting until the last seconds of the game where they held on to preserve their first victory of the season, 92-86, over the home team, Cypress.
Tomorrow, the Chargers (0-1)will be back in action for their second game of the Don Johnson Classic where they will play Compton College at 7:30pm in Gym II.
