Costa Mesa, Ca, -- With much needed motivation to get their first conference win, Cypress headed on the road to play Orange Coast Wednesday night. Coming into the game both teams were winless in conference play.
Cypress struggled to gain the lead the entire first half. It wasn't until a little over a minute remained in the first half that Kevin Barnes made a lay-up to put the Chargers ahead by two, 28-26. At the first half buzzer they led by three, 32-29.
Cypress used that momentum out of the locker room to begin the second half and never looked back as they got in front of the Pirates by as much as 15 points. Orange Coast mounted a late comeback, but Cypress was well in control of the game and drove their way to the 79-72 win.
For the Chargers, four players scored in double figures. Kevin Barnes led with 16 points and six rebounds, Jason Tran contributed 14 points and six rebounds, and both David Gonzalez and Jerred Cook scored 13 points in the win.
The Chargers improve to 6-12 overall and 1-2 in conference play while the Pirates fell to 6-13 overall and 0-2 in conference play.
This Friday, Jan. 17th, Cypress travels to play Riverside. Game time will be at 5:30pm.
