Chargers Take Second in Don Johnson Classic
David Gonzalez gets All-Tournament honors
Cypress, Cailf. -- The Chargers hosted West LA College in the final day of the Don Johnson Classic. Coming into the game the Chargers were 1-1 over the weekend, while West LA had dropped their previous two games.
Cypress had the upper hand throughout most of the first half as they were led by the scoring of David Gonzalez and Mark Townes. They held a 10 point advantage for most of the first half until West LA managed to cut that lead to only three at the break, 39-36.
Out of half-time, West LA had a technical foul called on their bench for taunting the officials. David Gonzalez sank both free throws for the Chargers.
West LA, behind the play of Brandon Hood and Deion McCoy, then came from behind to take a small lead over the Chargers. But the Chargers, fuled by 25 points from David Gonazalez, came back to take the lead with 5 minutes reamaing. In the final minute Cypress was forced to earn the win from the free throw stripe as West LA drew a few fouls to try and stop the Charger advance. Each time though, the Chargers made the free throws and sealed the win.
The win gave Cypress the runner-up trophy for the tournament, behind first place Chaffey, and leaves them with a 2-1 record. They will next host LA Harbor this Friday, Nov. 15th at 6pm in Gym II.
