Cypress College Volleyball Program Headlines State and Conference Awards

Members of the recently crowned Orange Empire Conference Championship women's volleyball team were recognized on the 2016 All-American, All-State, and All-Conference teams.

Freshman middle blocker Samantha Madrid received the Orange Emire Conference Most Valuable Player Award, along with AVCA All-American 2nd Team and All-State Team selections. Madrid propelled the Chargers' success this season, leading the team in kills, kills per set, blocks, and hitting percentage. Her .450 hitting percentage currently ranks second in the state.

Sophomores Rockelle Gholson, Emily Witz, and Samantha Martinez were selected to the All-OEC 1st Team. Gholson, a two-time All-Conference selection, finished second on the team in kills, kills per set, and blocks. Witz, also a two-time All-Conference selection, led the team in digs and digs per set. Martinez currently ranks first in the state; averaging 12.24 assists per set.

Sophomore Paige Buchanan and Freshman Brianna Johnson were added to the All-OEC 2nd Team.

Head Coach Nancy Welliver received her 3rd career OEC Coach of the Year Award after leading the OEC Champs to a 22-2 regular season record with a 15-1 record in conference play.

The 5th seeded Chargers begin postseason play at home tomorrow against 12th seeded Canyons at 6:00 p.m. Tickets to the CCCAA postseason event are $12 for general admission and $8 for staff, students, and children.
