By Wes McCurtis

CYPRESS, CA – The Cypress College women's volleyball team (1-0) defeated the Mt. San Jacinto Eagles (1-2) three sets to one (25-13, 24-26, 25-17, 25-12) in Wednesday night's season opener.

The Chargers were led by sophomore outside hitter Rockelle Gholson and sophomore middle blocker Sina Amasio. Gholson notched a team high 17 kills while Amasio made her presence felt at the net with 3 blocks to go along with 7 kills.

The size and athleticism of the Chargers proved to be too much for the Eagles early on as Gholson and freshman Samantha Madrid came out strong. The Chargers dominated the first set 25-13. Mt. San Jacinto responded after trailing 24-20 in the second set. The Eagles rallied to score 6 straight points capped off by back-to-back aces from Eagles freshman Luann O'Kane to steal the set 24-26.

Cypress picked up their intensity and played mistake free volleyball to recapture the momentum in the third set. The Chargers went on to win the following two sets and the match 3-1. Women's volleyball will return to action at home on Wednesday, September 7 at 6:00pm when they take on El Camino.
