Cypress, CA – The No. 9 Cypress College women's volleyball team (19-2, 12-1 OEC) continued their dominance at home with a 3-0 sweep (25-20, 25-19, 25-22) of Orange Coast College on Wednesday night. The win keeps Cypress atop the Orange Empire Conference standings and continues their unbeaten streak at home.

Sophomore libero Emily Witz made huge defensive plays all night, notching 23 digs. Brianna Johnson and Samantha Madrid powered the Chargers offense with 10 and 11 kills respectively.

It was a back and forth game early in the first set. The Chargers gained control after a Madrid kill followed by a violation on the Pirates, making it a 14-12 game. A pair of kills from Madrid allowed Cypress to pull away and take the first set 25-20.

Orange Coast came out strong in the second set, taking an early 6-4 lead. However, Cypress setter Samantha Martinez took control with her serving. Martinez served up 9 straight points, including 2 of her 4 aces to take a 13-6 lead and force a Pirates timeout. Orange Coast battled back out of the timout and cut the Cypress lead to 1. Madrid and Johnson were able to dominate at the net late in the game and take the second set 25-19.

The Pirates continued to fight in the third set as they capitalized on two long rallies to take an early lead. Both teams struggled to take control of the game as they traded points. With the third set in the balance at 21 apiece, Madrid gave the Chargers the lead with a timely tip at the net followed by an ace as Cypress closed out the match in set 3, 25-22.
