CYPRESS, CA - The women's volleyball team (7-1) is set to begin Orange Empire Conference play this week.
No. 7 ranked women's volleyball opened their season at home with a 3 sets to 1 victory over Mt. San Jacinto College. A week later they continued with a dominant 3 sets to 0 win over El Camino College. On the weekend of September 9th the Chargers finished 2nd in the Cerritos Invitational. They began the tournament sweeping 3 straight opponents including Glendale, San Bernardino and Cerritos College. The Chargers followed up with hard fought 3-2 victory in the quarterfinals against Long Beach City College and advanced to the semifinals against Canyons College. Cypress easily dispatched Canyons College 3 sets to 1 and advanced to the tournament final against Mira Costa College. The Chargers fought hard but fell to Mira Costa 3 sets to 1 in the championship game. The game was close as each set was won by 3 points or less.
Players to watch this season are Samantha Martinez, Rockelle Gholson and Samantha Madrid. Sophomore setter Samantha Martinez leads the Chargers with 24 service aces and 324 assists in 8 games. In 2015 at Trabuco Hills High School Martinez was named First Team All-Sea View League. Sophomore outside hitter Rockelle Gholson leads the Chargers with 91 kills in 8 games. Last season Gholson was second on the team with 214 kills in 29 games and was awarded First Team All-Orange Empire Conference. Freshman middle blocker Samantha Madrid is third on the team with 71 kills. Madrid comes to Cypress after winning a silver medal as a member of the Air Force Volleyball Team.
The Chargers are set to begin Orange Empire Conference play on Friday, September 16 at 6:00 pm on the road against Santa Ana College.
