Women's Volleyball Sweeps El Camino

CYPRESS, CA – The Cypress College women's volleyball team (2-0) swept the visiting El Camino Warriors (3-1) in three sets (25-19, 25-23, 25-18) on Wednesday night.

The Warriors entered their match against Cypress having not lost a set in their first three matches of the season, but they had no answer for the powerful outside hitting and defense at the net that the Chargers possess. Sophomore outside hitters Will Allshouse (11 Kills) and Rockelle Gholson (10 Kills) each notched double digit kills to lead the Chargers while freshman setter Samantha Martinez (38 Assists) served up her teammates all match long.

The Chargers were able to capitalize on some mistakes by El Camino in the first set and pull away. Ateya Allen closed out the opening set with back-to-back blocks to hand the Warriors their first loss of the season (25-19).

The Warriors battled with Cypress to grab a 15-13 lead in the second set only to see it slip away as the Chargers regained momentum late. Leading 24-23, Gholson ended the set with a kill to give the Chargers a 2-0 advantage. Cypress jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the third set and were able to maintain control throughout to complete the sweep (25-18).

Women's volleyball is back in action at the Cerritos Tournament on September 9th and 10th before they begin conference play on the road against Santa Ana on Friday, September 16th at 6:00 pm.
