CYPRESS, Calif. --- Irvine Valley was able to hang on throughout the overtime period and eventually defeated the Cypress Chargers, 74-70.
The back and forth game came down to a crucial play with .4 seconds left in regulation. Down 62-64, Lauren Hong launched a 3-pt shot with 5 seconds left on the clock. Denshay Wallace managed to snag the offensive rebound and go up for a layup with .4 seconds left.
Wallace was fouled in the act of shooting and was given an opportunity to force overtime with two free throws. Wallace sank two free throws which tied the game up at 64 a piece, forcing an overtime period.
Katey Kanamoto hit a critical three point bucket in OT to put the Chargers up one with just under three minutes left to play.
The Lasers then went on to outscore the Chargers 8-3 in the last few minutes of overtime, giving Irvine Valley their fourth OEC victory in a row after a 0-3 start.
Breanna Patton led the Chargers in scoring with 16 points on the night and also shot 55% on the night, going 6-11 from the field.
Denshay Wallace recorded 14 points of her own while Lauren Hong finished off the night with 12 points going 3 for 4 from behind the arch for the Lady Chargers.
Megan Hanson led the Chargers in assists with a season high of 6 on the night.
Cypress now sits at 14-10 overall with a 5-2 conference record.
The Chargers will look to bounce back when they face Fullerton on the road, February 5th, starting at 5:30 PM.
