Iniguez Hat-Trick Powers Cypress Past Golden West, 8-0

CYPRESS, CA – The Cypress College women's soccer team (9-1-5, 6-0-4 OEC) defeated Golden West College (2-8-3, 1-6-3 OEC) 8-0 on Friday at home behind a hat trick from Cynthia Iniguez. The 8-0 result is the largest margin of victory for the Chargers since the 2011 season (W, 9-0 vs. Irvine Valley 9/30/11).

The Chargers began the first half controlling possession. Chargers forward Kailey Merino opened the scoring (2:14) on the Chargers first shot after finishing off a great pass from midfielder Jade Jaso. Thirty seconds later Chargers' midfielder Julissa Zuniga fed a great ball into midfielder Cynthia Iniguez who scored (2:53) to make it 2-0 Chargers. Later in the first half Cypress forward Kristen Nolan scored (16:44) to make it 3-0. Several minutes later Merino added another goal (20:10) after her first shot was saved and she converted the rebound to make it 4-0. The Chargers continued to control possession as they kept the ball in Golden West's half of the field for almost the entire half and went into halftime with a 4-0 lead.

The Chargers continued to create opportunities in the second half. After receiving a great pass from Zuniga, Chargers' midfielder Nina Powers scored (45:35) thirty seconds into the second half, giving Cypress a 5-0 lead. Iniguez would get on the score sheet for the second time, with a goal (47:03) after converting a great pass from Jaso to take a 6-0 lead. Iniguez would score her third goal of the game in the 57th minute before Cypress midfielder Nicole Walters added the final goal of the game off of a Zuniga pass. The Chargers continued to control possession through the end of the second half as the game finished 8-0.

With the win the Chargers move into sole possession of second place in the Orange Empire Conference. Women's soccer will return to action on Tuesday, October 25 at Irvine Valley College at 3:00 pm.
