Merino Hat-Trick Leads Chargers Past Dons, 6-0

CYPRESS, CA – The Cypress College women's soccer team (8-1-3, 5-0-2 OEC) defeated the visiting Santa Ana Dons (5-6-2, 1-5-2 OEC) 6-0 on Friday behind a hat-trick from sophomore forward Kailey Merino.

The Chargers jumped out to an early lead in the 14th minute when Merino received a cross from Nina Powers and fired a shot past the keeper. Shortly after, Merino found the back of the net for her second goal of the game thanks to an assist from sophomore midfielder Nicole Walters (26:35). Cypress continued to dominate possession and ended the first half with a two goal lead.

The Chargers kept attacking in the second half, adding three goals to their tally in a four minute span. Walters opened up the second half scoring in the 65th minute, followed by a third goal from Merino in the 67th minute, capped off by a Kristen Nolan goal in the 69th minute to give the Chargers a 5-0 lead. Sophomore defender Kelsea Freiling finished off the game with a header past the keeper on a Marissa Gulley corner kick.

Cypress outshot the Dons 18-4 for the game, including 11 shots on goal to Santa Ana's 3. Women's soccer will return to action on Tuesday, October 11 when they travel to take on 1st place Santiago Canyon at 3:00 pm.
