Women's Soccer Set to Begin Conference Play

CYPRESS, CA - The women's soccer team (3-1-1) is set to begin Orange Empire Conference play this week.

Cypress began the season with a dominating 7-0 road win against Southwestern College. They then tied East Los Angeles College in their home opener. The Chargers responded with back-to-back dominating road wins against Canada College and Foothill College on their annual trip to NorCal. In their most recent game they took on Fresno City College and suffered a 3-1 defeat.

Players to watch this season on are Gissel Avila, Julissa Zuniga and Kailey Merino. Sophomore midfielder Gissel Avila leads the Chargers with six goals and one assist in four games. She was the second leading scorer on the team last year with eight goals and twelve assists. Freshman midfielder Julissa Zuniga has made her presence felt early this season with two goals and two assists. Zuniga was a three-time All-Freeway League selection, CIF Finalist, and was named to the All-CIF Third Team. Sophomore forward Kailey Merino is one of the leaders of the team this year. Merino has recorded two goals and two assists so far this season. She was the third highest scorer on the team with six goals last season.

The Chargers are set to begin conference play on Friday, September 16 at 3:00 pm on the road against Fullerton College.
