Chargers Defeat Irvine Valley 2-1 in OEC Home Opener

By Robert Nilsen

CYPRESS, CA – The Cypress College women's soccer team (6-1-1, 3-0-0 OEC) defeated Irvine Valley College (3-3-3, 1-2-1 OEC) in their OEC Home Opener 2-1 on Friday.

The Chargers and Irvine Valley started off the game slowly as there were not many chances to score in the first half. Cypress cashed in on a rare opportunity in the first half when forward Kristen Nolan scored on a great pass from midfielder Taylor Jones to take a 1-0 lead. Following the goal, both teams enjoyed possession, but could not get the ball into any dangerous areas. However, Irvine equalized when Cypress failed to clear the ball and Alexandra Benedict scored to make it 1-1 heading into halftime.

The Chargers started the second half strong as they looked to score and take the lead. Early in the second half Chargers midfielder Nicole Walters made a great run down the left side and crossed the ball into forward Kristen Nolan who scored off of a well taken volley for her second goal of the game, giving the Chargers a 2-1 lead. When play resumed the Chargers dominated time of possession and had several good opportunities, but could not find the finishing touch to put the game out of reach. Irvine responded with several good counterattacks and came close to scoring, but their best opportunity struck the post and the Chargers held on to win 2-1.

Women's soccer will return to action on Tuesday, September 27 at Norco College at 3:00pm.
