Cypress, CA - Cypress College women's basketball (23-6, 10-2 OEC) won their sixth OEC Championship on Friday night after a dominate 61-49 victory over Fullerton (5-19, 1-11).

The Lady Chargers forced the Hornets to commit 35 turnovers and scored 27 points from those opportunities. Sylvia Garcia led the way with 14 points and five steals while Bianca Silva added 10 points and nine rebounds. Erika Nilsen had nine points, four rebounds, and two steals in her final regular season game for Cypress College. Nilsen was received with a loud round of applause during the pre-game ceremony.

The Chargers got off to a slow start, missing 11 layups in the first half despite forcing the Hornets into 18 turnovers. The two teams were tied at 11 apiece with more than four minutes left in the half, but the Chargers went on a 9-2 run thanks to five points from Garcia to take a 20-13 lead in the first quarter. However, the missed layups caught up to the Chargers in the second quarter as they could only score eight points in the period. Down 15-28, the Hornets capitalized on the Chargers' stagnant offense and went on a 10-0 run led by six points from Monica Hanna and four points from Mika Wilson.

The game was decided in the third quarter when the Chargers went on a 27-4 run. Utilizing the full court press, the Chargers' defense harassed the Hornets into 10 turnovers.

With a 57-33 lead into the fourth quarter, the Chargers offense once again stagnated as they scored only four points. However, their defense held off the Hornets just enough to secure the victory.

The Lady Chargers will enter the playoffs in hopes of making a run at the state championship. The team will learn their first round match playoff opponent on Monday, February 22nd.
