Cypress, CA – Cypress College women's basketball (14-5, 1-1 OEC) defeated Irvine Valley College (13-5, 1-1 OEC) 78-62 in their Orange Empire Conference home opener on Friday night, snapping IVC's 15 game conference winning streak.
Dominique Culho and Alyssa Movchan each netted 16 points to lead the Chargers. Morgan Bryant led the Lasers with 19 points and seven rebounds on 9-of-11 shooting.
Both teams traded baskets for the entirety of the first half. However, the Chargers were able to dictate the tempo of the game with their full court pressure. Despite 15 first half turnovers the Lasers went into the break trailing by one, 34-33.
The Chargers defensive intensity and timely shot making began to take its toll on the Lasers in the second half as they continued to capitalize on IVC turnovers, which sparked a 13-0 run in the third quarter.
Cypress maintained their lead in the fourth quarter to earn their first OEC win of the season. Women's basketball will travel to Saddleback on Wednesday, January 13th and return to action at home against Riverside on Friday, January 15th at 7PM.
