New Champion to be Crowned in Lady Charger Classic

 

DAY THREE BRACKET

OCC 77 – Grossmont 56

The Orange Coast College Pirates (3-4) won game five of the 32nd Annual Lady Charger Classic 77-56 over the Grossmont College Griffins (1-6). Orange Coast jumped out to an early 7-2 lead and never looked back, using the three point shot to increase their lead to 28-13 at the end of the first quarter. The second quarter would start no differently as Sami Little played lights out. Little scored 18 points and grabbed five rebounds in the first half. Grossmont had 13 first half turnovers, which led to easy transition buckets for the Pirates. Sami Little finished the game with 23 points, seven rebounds, five assists, six steals, and three blocks. Valeria Garay led the Griffins with 11 points and five rebounds.

West LA 72 – LA Southwest 60

The West LA Wildcats (3-4) defeated the LA Southwest Cougars (0-7) in game six of the Lady Charger Classic. LA Southwest struggled on offense scoring only five first quarter points and committing six turnovers. The Cougars continued to struggle as the Wildcats used a 13-5 run to take a commanding 32-10 lead halfway through the second quarter. LA Southwest fought back using a 9-2 run to close out the first half, cutting their deficit to 15. West LA got complacent on offense, allowing LA Southwest to come within eight points late in the fourth quarter before closing out the victory. Zhane Carter of West LA had a game-high 30 points and Winter Grant of Southwest poured in 23 points.

East LA 86 – Santa Monica 79

The East LA Huskies (6-3) defeated the Santa Monica Corsairs (2-6) 86-79 in game seven of the Lady Charger Classic. Both teams traded baskets to start the game, with Santa Monica taking a 23-17 lead to end the first quarter. The Huskies answered with an 11-5 run to tie the game, relying heavily on the three point shot. The Huskie's Tiffani Martinez led all scorers at the half with 17 points, shooting 5-of-12 from downtown. Santa Monica would hold a sizeable lead through much of the second half. Trailing by three with eight seconds remaining, Santa Monica's Oshaela Gray banked in a shot from long range with 0.8 seconds remaining to force overtime. East LA opened overtime on a 10-2 run and never looked back, winning 86-79. Martinez led the Huskies with 21 points and Gray had a game-high 26 points.

Palomar 84 – Cypress 71

The Palomar Comets (7-1) defeated the Cypress Chargers (5-2) 84-71 in game eight of the Lady Charger Classic. Palomar ramped up their defensive pressure forcing Cypress to turn the ball over 19 times. The Chargers would overcome their mistakes and trailed 38-26 at the half. After some halftime adjustments, Cypress opened the second half on a 12-6 run, cutting their deficit to six points. Palomar answered with a 9-3 run to regain control of the game. The Comets pounded Cypress on the boards, collecting 24 offensive rebounds leading to 22 second chance points. Chelse Ayala led the Comets with 18 points and eight rebounds. Sylvia Garcia led the Chargers with a double-double, including 13 points and 13 rebounds to lead Cypress.
