Women’s Basketball Finishes Third at AVC Holiday Tournament

Lancaster, CA – The Cypress College women's basketball team (10-4) finished third in the Antelope Valley College Holiday Tournament this past weekend. Freshman guard Sylvia Garcia received All-Tournament honors.

Cypress Chargers 75 – Glendale Vaqueros 51

The Chargers opened up the tournament with a 75-51 victory over the Vaqueros (3-9). Cypress outscored Glendale in all four quarters. The Chargers shot 41-percent from the field while holding Glendale to 24-percent shooting. Freshman guard Alyssa Movchan led the Chargers with 16 points, two rebounds, two assists, and two steals while Sylvia Garcia and Dominique Culhno added eight points each.

Mt. San Antonio Mounties 76 – Cypress Chargers 55

The Chargers suffered their largest loss of the season in the tournament semi-final against Mt. San Antonio (13-1). Sylvia Garcia led Cypress with 16 points and six rebounds while Alyssa Movchan added 12 points.

The Mounties jumped out to an 11 point lead in the first quarter and Cypress was unable to close the gap. The Chargers struggled on offense, shooting 19-of-68 from the field and 5-of-18 from three-point range. The Mounties offense was clicking on all cylinders led by a game-high 17 points from Caira Benton. Despite 26 turnovers, Mt. San Antonio shot 48.4-percent from the field allowing them to maintain control throughout.

Cypress Chargers 52 – Antelope Valley Marauders 43

Cypress defeated the host Marauders (4-8) 52-43 in the third place game on Sunday. Sylvia Garcia and Erika Nilsen led the way for the Chargers with eight points and seven rebounds each. Natalie Garcia added eight points and two steals.

The Chargers struggles on offense continued as they shot 28.4-percent from the field and 13.8-percent from long range. However, Cypress played tremendous defensively, holding AVC to 27.4-percent shooting. Cypress forced 21 turnovers resulting in 13 points for the Chargers on their way to a third place finish.

The women's basketball team will look to have another strong showing at the Grossmont Tournament on December 28th-30th.
