Softball Hangs On to Defeat Rio Hondo, 7-5

Cypress, CA – The softball team (1-1) avoided déjà vu, holding off a late rally at the top of the seventh to win 7-5 against Rio Hondo (3-4).

Vanessa Ledesma earned a win despite surrendering five runs and throwing two strikeouts while Ashley Ramirez threw two strikeouts to earn a save. The Chargers knocked Rio Hondo's Brenae Martinez for seven runs as Taylor Pierce and Tobi Salzman earned two RBI each.

The Roadrunners took the early lead in the first inning when Esthefany Martinez scored on a sacrifice fly. The Chargers responded in the bottom of the first with runners on second and third when Pierce smacked a two-run single to center field.

Cypress pulled off a four-run rally in the second inning thanks to a string of consecutive hits from Alexis Carmona, Justice Walker and Tobi Salzman to give the Chargers a 6-1 lead. Rio Hondo came back in the third inning to stay in the game after Salvador hit an RBI single and later scored on a fielder's choice.

The Chargers added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth when Carmona scored Pierce off an RBI single to extend the lead to 7-3.

In the bottom of the seventh, the roadrunners put pressure on the home team after Mylene Valencia drove in an RBI triple to cut the Chargers lead to 7-4. Ramirez came in to close for Ledesma and surrendered an RBI single to Stephanie Pirir-Pulido. Ramirez proceeded to strike out the next two batters, but found herself in a jam after giving up a walk and hitting the next batter. With two out and the bases loaded, Briana Rios lined out to right field to finish the game.
