Chargers Shutout District Rival Fullerton, 2-0

Cypress, CA - Cypress College (22-3, 13-0 OEC) came out victorious in a pitching duel against Fullerton College (16-12, 6-5 OEC) as the Chargers gutted out a 2-0 win at home on Wednesday afternoon.

Vanessa Ledesma pitched a two-hit complete game shutout to go 9-0 and lower her ERA to 2.90 while her counterpart Brigid Ruiz (16-10) surrendered 2 runs in six innings of work for the loss.

The two pitchers held opposing batters quiet in the first couple innings. Ruiz managed to hold off the Chargers in the early innings by forcing several pop flies, but Ledesma kept the Hornets silent by limiting them to grounders and some slick defending, including a snagged line drive.

The Chargers finally scored in the bottom of the fifth inning with two outs and Alexis Carmona on second. Justice Walker smacked a hard-hit RBI sinlge to left field to score Carmona, giving Cypress a 1-0 lead. After a Tobi Salzman single, which advanced Walker to third, the Chargers scored their next run off an unusual circumstance. In an attempt to intentionally walk Taylor Pierce, Fullerton's catcher Anissa Loera stepped out of the box and got called for an illegal pitch. The runners all advanced one base, including Walker who doubled the Chargers' lead.

Ledesma put the Hornets away with back-to-back 1-2-3 innings to finish the game.

Cypress College will face Santiago Canyon on the road at 2:00 PM Friday, April 1 and head to Ventura College the following day for the Ventura Spring Games.
