Chargers Mercy Canyons in Shutout Victory

Cypress, CA - The softball team made a statement against Canyons, beating them by mercy rule in six innings, 8-0.

Taylor Pierce (1-1) bounced back from a tough loss against El Camino on Friday by throwing a one-hit shutout with eight strikeouts. Pierce helped her cause at the plate, going 2-for-2 with four RBI while freshman Melanie Okazaki went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Canyons' Ashley Russo (1-1) didn't have an answer for the Chargers' lineup, surrendering 10 hits and four runs in the loss.

The Chargers got on board in the first inning when Jezz Portillo and Pierce hit back-to-back RBI singles to put the team ahead 2-0.

At the bottom of the fifth inning, the Chargers went on a three-run rally sparked by an RBI single from Karen Guillen. Emma Walker followed with a sacrifice fly to bring home another run and Briana Gonzalez capped it off with an RBI double to score Karen Guillen, giving Cypress a 6-0 lead.

Cypress sealed the victory with two-runs in the sixth inning to end the game by mercy rule.

The Chargers will play their next game on the road against Cerritos on Thursday, February 11 at 2:30 PM and return home on Friday, February 12 to host Long Beach at 2 PM.
