Chargers Hang On to Defeat Pirates on Sophomore Day, 1-0

By Wes McCurtis

CYPRESS, CA – The Cypress College women's soccer team (10-5-3, 9-2-3 OEC) earned a big 1-0 victory over the visiting Orange Coast College Pirates (11-4-3, 8-3-3 OEC) on Friday's Sophomore Day. The win gives the Chargers a one-game lead over Fullerton College for the second spot in the OEC standings. Cypress has just two regular season games remaining, including the season finale on the road against Fullerton.

The Chargers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead against the Pirates when freshman Mary Dynda was fouled outside the box and lined up for a free kick. Dynda sent a screaming shot into the top right corner of the net, over the outstretched arms of Coast keeper Alison Marlow (20:40).

Cypress used their physicality on defense to hold off an OCC comeback, as they completed the 1-0 shutout. The Chargers' defense allowed the Pirates to get off just three shots, which were all stopped by freshman keeper Tabatha Macedo.

Women's soccer will look to hold on to second place in the Orange Empire Conference before postseason play as they resume action on the road against Santa Ana on Tuesday, November 7 at 3:00 pm.
