Chargers Push Past the Pirates in Four Sets

Cypress- The Cypress Chargers (16-7, 7-2) have beaten Orange Coast (11-7, 3-6) for the third time this season after a 3-1 victory at home on Friday night (25-20, 25-21, 20-25, 25-16). Freshman Madison May led the team with 52 kills while freshman setter Amy Crowell nabbed 47 assists and 2 service aces.

The Chargers opened up the match on a strong note as the Orange Coast Pirates had trouble breaking past their defense. The rotation of May, Rockelle Gholson, Jazmyn Covington, and Sina Amasio proved troublesome as the Chargers won the first set 25-20.

The Pirates seemingly found a foothold in the second set as they led 12-5. However, after a timeout the Chargers rallied back thanks to some timely kills by May, key blocking by Amasio, and several Pirate errors. The Chargers finished the set on top 25-21.

The third set did not go in the Chargers favor as they found themselves committing untimely receiving errors while the hitters couldn't break past Orange Coast's defense. The Chargers found themselves trailing by 5 points for majority of the set and lost 25-20.

Demi Nicholson closed the door on the Pirates in the fourth set thanks to a rally sparked by the service specialist. Amasio and May fired on all cylinders while Crowell broke down the Pirates defense as the Chargers took a lopsided 25-16 victory to end the match.

The women's volleyball team will face the Santa Ana Dons on the road Wednesday, November 5 at 5:00 pm.
