Chargers San Diego Tournament Run Ends in Semi-Final

San Diego- Cypress College (8-5) went 2-1 in the San Diego City College Tournament this past Saturday, getting eliminated in the semifinals by Glendale College (AZ). The tournament proved to be an exhausting affair as all three game times for the Chargers started within a four hour time frame. The Chargers won their first two matches in dominant fashion, but the lack of rest between the second and third game proved to be a critical factor as Cypress struggled to put up a fight against Glendale College.

3-0 win vs. Cerro Coso

The Chargers began their tournament run with a 3-0 sweep over Cerro Coso College (25-17, 25-21, 25-13). Sophomore Madison May breezed through Cerro Coso's defense, landing 23 kills out of 39 attempts, while sophomore Pamela Fa'Alata made 34 assists. Freshman Demi Nicholson proved to be excellent behind the line, delivering a game-high 4 aces in the match.

3-1 win vs. Taft

The second round went favorably for Cypress College as the Chargers took a 3-1 victory over Taft College (26-24, 25-16, 23-25, 25-18). Madison May landed 17 kills while freshman Raquel Medina came up huge with 14 kills and 12 digs. Pamela Fa'Alata had a strong performance as she added 9 kills, 48 assists, and had a team-high 3 aces.

0-3 loss vs. Glendale (AZ)

The semifinal could not have come at a more inconvenient time for the Chargers as they faced a well-rested Glendale right after their match against Taft. Cypress got swept (18-25, 19-25, 14-15) as they struggled against the tournament favorites. The Chargers landed a total 29 kills throughout the game led by Madison May with 12 while the defense only had two blocks total (Jazmyn Covington and Sina Amasio).

The Chargers will play their first home game of the season against Mt. Sac on Wednesday, September 30 at 6:00 PM.
