Women's Soccer Defeats Golden West 5-1

Cypress- The Cypress College women's soccer team (11-2, 4-2 OEC) extended their win streak to five with a 5-1 victory over Golden West (5-6-2, 3-4-2 OEC) at home on Friday Afternoon.

The Chargers came out sluggish in the first half, which has not been the case over a four game stretch that has included four shutout victories. Golden West put pressure on Cypress when Daisy Gallegos found the back of the net in the 29th minute to give the Rustlers a 1-0 lead heading into halftime. The Chargers had not allowed a goal in four games and would use halftime to regroup and refocus on the task at hand.

Cypress began to dominate possession in the second half and was able to get quality shots on goal early. In the 59th minute Elizabeth Sanchez netted the equalizer, which was quickly followed with a goal from Gissel Avila to take a 2-1 lead over Golden West. The Chargers did not let up as Kailey Merino found the back of the net in the 66th minute thanks to a Taylor Jones assist. Karla Lopez and Mackenzie Leckey added two additional goals late to finish off the Rustlers 5-1.

The women's soccer team will look to continue their strong play when they visit Santiago Canyon on Tuesday, October 20th at 2:00pm. Santiago Canyon was the last team to hand Cypress a loss (3-1, Sept. 25th).
