Chargers Move to 2nd in OEC Standings with 1-0 Win Over Dons

CYPRESS, CA – An early first half goal from the Chargers (5-3-3, 3-1-2 OEC) proved to be enough to get past the Santa Ana College Dons (3-5-2, 1-4-1 OEC) at home on Wednesday afternoon, 1-0.

An early shot from freshman forward, Audree Campos, started the Chargers off in the right direction. The Chargers continued to press the Dons defense with attempts by Nicolle Valdez and Elena Lucero. However, it was not until the 20th minute until the Chargers found the back of the net. Jordan Barber, who anchors the Charger defense as a center defender, made a run from inside her defensive half to beat the Dons midfield and play a ball through to Valdez, who slotted the ball past the Dons' goalkeeper to give the Chargers a 1-0 lead. Valdez now has six overall goals this season, two coming in Orange Empire Conference play.

The second half started with a shot by Valdez that rang off the post. Minutes later, Morgan Patea would have her first shot on goal of the game, that went just right of the post. The Chargers had the Dons on their heels. In the 80th minute Patea had a breakaway one-on-one with the goalie. Patea tried to slip the ball by the Dons goalkeeper, Sara Gomez, but Gomez was able to make the save.

The Chargers look to continue their win streak as they take on the Golden West College Rustlers at Golden West on Friday, October 5th. Kick-off is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
