Cypress Falls to Undefeated Santiago Canyon, 6-2

CYPRESS, CA – The Cypress College women's soccer team (7-5-4, 5-3-3 OEC) fell to undefeated OEC leader Santiago Canyon at home on Friday (14-0, 12-0 OEC), 6-2. The Hawks currently sit at the top of the OEC standings and No. 3 in state rankings.

The Chargers started out on their heels after a quick cross from the Hawks and a header on frame saved by goalkeeper Tabatha Macedo. However, Cypress returned the favor with shots by Morgan Patea, Taleah Carter and Rebecca DiDonato. Patea and Carter would each tally another shot on goal, this time save worthy from the Hawks goalkeeper.

The Hawks found a way to strike first with a goal in the 27th minute and would keep the Chargers defense on their toes the rest of the half. The Charger defense led by center defender Jordan Barber and saves from Macedo would keep the Hawks at bay and go in to the second half only down by one goal.

The second half started out in favor of the Hawks with back-to-back shots from their offense, and in the 57th minute the Hawks would earn their second goal of the game. Macedo made the initial save, but the rebound is where the Hawks found the back of the net. Two more goals found their way past the Charger defense making it 4-0 in favor of the Hawks.

Not giving up, freshman forward, Audree Campos, broke forward with a pass from DiDonato and fired the ball past the Hawks' goalkeeper. The score now 4-1, Campos saw another opportunity and took it – a shot from 20 yards out beat the Hawks' goalkeeper over the top, making the score 4-2.

The Hawks responded with two late goals to put the Chargers away and leave with a victory.

Women's soccer will look to rebound next week in a marquee matchup against the district rival Hornets at Fullerton College, followed by the Lasers at Irvine Valley College. Both games are scheduled for 3:00 pm.
