Jaylene Oviedo and Thao Truong Named to All-Tournament Team at Lady Charger Classic

CYPRESS, CA- The Cypress women's basketball team (4-6) hosted the 38th annual Lady Charger Classic over the weekend, playing three games in three days. The Chargers faced Grossmont, Palomar and Citrus College finishing with a 1-2 record. Jaylene Oviedo and Thao Truong were named to the All-Tournament team.

Cypress opened the tournament with a win against Grossmont, 68-50 on Friday night. The Chargers were able to rack up an early lead after a lay-up from Jaylene Oviedo to put them up by 10 with just under five minutes to go in the first quarter. The Chargers continued the momentum into the second quarter, a steal and fast-break layup by Thao Truong gave the team a 19-point lead. Grossmont would not go down so quickly and started to make a comeback as the second half got underway. They were able to cut the Charger lead to 10 but that would be as close as they got as Cypress went on to win the game comfortably, 68-50.

Cypress faced the undefeated Palomar College Comets in game two of the tournament. The Chargers kept the game close to start, only down four at the end of quarter one. Palomar's offense exploded in the second quarter, scoring 31 points on 55% shooting. The Chargers faced a 22 point deficit at halftime and were unable to respond, losing the game 84-55. The Chargers were led by Jaylene Oviedo who had 12 points and four steals.

In the final game of the tournament, the Chargers fell in a hard fought battle against Citrus College, 54-44. The Chargers were led in scoring by Jaylene Oviedo who hit three three-pointers and finished with nine points. Thao Truong totaled seven points, six rebounds and three assists while Patricia Lantin added seven points and seven rebounds off the bench.

UP NEXT: The Lady Chargers will host Compton College (1-8) on Thursday, December 16 at 5PM. The team will have a quick turnaround as they travel to Grossmont for a tournament that weekend.
