Chargers Take the Series from the Dons

CYPRESS, CA - Cypress Chargers softball (13-1, 2-0 OEC) won their second consecutive game against the Santa Ana Dons (3-8, 0-2 OEC), 2-0.

For their second Orange Empire Conference appearance, Cypress hosted Santa Ana for the middle game of the three-game series. The Chargers mercied the Dons in their first meeting on Tuesday in five innings, 13-4. Unlike their first matchup, Cypress had a slow start offensively.

The Chargers got the bats going in the second inning when the team scored two runs off of two hits. Kaitlyn Reynolds roped a strong single to left field which scored Jaylene Duarte from second, 1-0. Later in the inning, the home team loaded the bases which gave Ashlynn Ortiz an RBI opportunity. She was able to lift the ball deep enough to the outfield for a sacrifice fly out to score Dempsey Wood, 2-0.

Santa Ana would threaten in the sixth but would be unable to score as Cypress continued to keep the Dons bats scoreless. The Chargers rode out the matchup to win their second conference game and shutout Santa Ana, 2-0. Reynolds scored the first RBI for the team as she went 1-3. Ortiz earned the second RBI with her sacrifice fly out. Reynolds pitched the complete game shutout with two strikeouts and earned the victory.

UP NEXT: Cypress will host Antelope Valley College for a double header event on Saturday, March 9. First pitch is scheduled for 11:30 am.
