Chargers Sweep District Rival Hornets, 3-0

CYPRESS, CA – The 17th-ranked Cypress College women's volleyball team (6-3, 1-1 OEC) defended their home floor with a 3-0 sweep over Fullerton College (3-5, 0-2 OEC) on Wednesday night (25-21, 25-14, 25-21). It was the first sweep of the season for Chargers.

The duo of Brianna Johnson and Kayla Owens led the Chargers with 20 kills and 15 kills, respectively, while Taylor Togia notched 42 assists on the night. Owens also finished the match with 15 digs.

The Chargers jumped out to an early lead in the opening set, but Fullerton came storming back to take a 19-18 lead. A pair of Johnson kills and some tremendous defense at the net from Cypress helped them pull away late to take set one, 25-21.

Cypress dominated the second set throughout. After taking an early 11-3 lead, the Chargers ended the set with an 8-0 run, highlighted by a pair of kills and an ace from freshman Khamis Berneker.

The Hornets put up a tough fight in the third set, but it wasn't enough, as the Chargers completed the sweep and evened up their Orange Empire Conference record at 1-1.

Women's Volleyball will return to action on the road Friday at Orange Coast College. First serve is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
