Chargers Swim Shines in Season Opener

TORRANCE, CA - Cypress Chargers swim opened up their 2022 season at El Camino College on Saturday, February 12th. The unscored, triple distance meet was the first competition under new head coach, Frisk Driscoll.

The meet was a competiton between Cypress, El Camino and Santa Monica College. The non-traditional meet format consisted of competing in three increasing distances of one of the six disciplines (Butterfly, Backstroke, Breaststroke, Sprint Free, IM and Distance Free). Once all three distances were completed, the lowest combined time was declared the winner.

The Chargers came out victorious in five of twelve categories, the first place finishers are listed below:

-Brandon Rubio (Men's Butterfly)

-Nick Stellino (Men's Backstroke)

-Marisol Navarez (Women's Breaststroke)

-Nicole Maslog (Women's Distance Free)

-Ethan Umpornpuckdi (Men's Distance Free)

In addition to wins in the individual events, both the men and women won the 200 Medley Relay. The Women's relay (Celinda Robles, Narvaez, Maslog, Hanah Salazar) finished in a time of 2:06.94, while the Men's relay (Sawyer Nering, Umpornpuckdi, Rubio, Chad Goche) finished in a time of 1:48.33.

"It was exciting to get the season started with some solid racing right out of the gates. Some of our athletes haven't competed in a swim meet in nearly two years and being able to hold a unique meet with great competitors in El Camino and Santa Monica was exactly the way to get our 2022 season rolling," said Head Coach Frisk Driscoll after his first meet as Head Coach of the Chargers Swimming & Diving Program.
