WASHINGTON D.C.- Cypress baseball alum, Tylor Megill, has been named the Opening Day Starter for the New York Mets on April 7th vs the Washington Nationals. The 2016 Charger standout will begin his 2022 campaign at 4:05 PM PST where he and the Mets will look to earn their first win of the season.
Megill had an impressive rookie season in 2021, where he made 18 starts for the Mets finishing the season with a 4.52 ERA over 89.2 innings pitched. Megill's best stretch of the 2021 season began with a start against the Pittsburgh Pirates on July 17th where he threw 6.0 innings allowing 0 runs. Tylor was poised to earn his first MLB win in his next start versus the Toronto Blue Jays on July 23rd. Once again, Megill allowed 0 runs over 6.0 innings pitched, but this time he held Toronto to only two hits as the Mets secured the 3-0 victory. Megill, 26, played for the Chargers in 2016 where he served as the ace on the Cypress pitching staff. Megill was an All-OEC first team selection after finishing the season with the second most wins in the state (11). In his 17 appearances on the mound, Megill collected 87 strikeouts with a 3.72 ERA in 101.2 innings. After one year at Cypress, Megill signed with the University of Arizona, and was drafted by the Mets in 2018.
