Chargers Win Three at San Diego Mesa Water Polo Classic

SAN DIEGO, CA – The Cypress College women's water polo team (9-4, 1-2 OEC) added three more wins to their total after four games at the 20th Annual San Diego Mesa Women's Water Polo Classic this past weekend.

Cypress began the tournament with back-to-back wins in group b on Friday. The Chargers started off with a 12-6 victory against Allan Hancock, followed by an 11-7 victory over tournament host San Diego Mesa. Sierra College handed the Chargers their only loss of the tournament, 15-2, on Saturday morning. However, the Chargers responded with an 11-7 victory over Ventura College to wrap-up the weekend.

Recent Charger of the Week recipient, Natasha Velez, had another huge weekend for the Lady Chargers. Velez finished the weekend with a team-high 15 goals, 17 steals, and 4 assists. Joana Marquez and Ailien Nguyenly each added 6 goals, while goalie Kaylie Merrill collected 28 saves on the weekend.

Women's water polo will return to Orange Empire Conference action when they host Riverside City College on Wednesday at 3:00 pm. The Tigers currently sit atop the OEC with a 13-1 overall record and 2-0 conference record.
