SACRAMENTO, CA - In an intense battle for the 3C2A State Championship, the Cypress Chargers faced off against Folsom Lake College in a rematch of last year's championship. Despite a valiant second-half effort, the Chargers fell 2-1 to the Falcons, finishing as state runners-up in their second consecutive title match appearance.
At the start, Folsom Lake struck early, giving the Falcons a 1-0 lead. Cypress faced further adversity when a handball in the box awarded Folsom Lake a penalty kick. Madi Stroh converted the opportunity in the 44th minute, sending the Falcons into halftime with a 2-0 advantage.
In the second half, the Chargers came out of the break with renewed intensity, dominating possession and creating numerous scoring chances. Their relentless pressure paid off in the 58th minute when Naomi Lee showcased her playmaking skills, delivering a perfect cross from the right side. Amber Mielke battled for a header inside the box but was fouled, earning a penalty kick for Cypress. Megan Alcantara stepped up and coolly converted the penalty, cutting the deficit to 2-1.
Cypress outshot Folsom Lake 8-3 in the second half and earned five corner kicks compared to the Falcons' one. However, the Chargers couldn't capitalize on their opportunities.
The Chargers finished their 2024 season with a 21-2-3 overall record, second in the Orange Empire Conference, and a back-to-back State Finals appearances.
