Women’s Soccer Advances in Playoffs After Shutout Victory

CYPRESS, CA- Cypress women's soccer (14-2-4, 9-2-3 OEC) shutout the Antelope Valley Marauders (15-4-4, 11-0-3 WSC) with a score of 2-0.

The Chargers scored two while keeping the Marauders out of the net on Saturday, November 19th. Cypress and Antelope Valley met for a windy afternoon with plenty of fans to witness the second round of the CCCAA SoCal Regional Playoffs.

In the first half, the unpredictable winds that reached up to 10 mph led to a game of field position. It was an almost equal affair in shots with Cypress having seven shots to Antelope Valley's six. Each side pressured the opposing goalkeeper as the Chargers saved three on goal attempts and the Marauders saved two in the first 45 minutes of play.

To open the second half, Cypress scored from a goal off the foot of Presli Dillon and assisted by Miriam Nuño Alvarez at the 48th minute. After a lot of action from within the box, Dillon's strike hit the bottom left side of the net past a diving goalkeeper. As play continued Cypress's goalkeeper, Siriana Gudiño, had an effective and aggressive plan to push up in the box and secure the ball to take away any Marauder opportunities.

In the 74th minute, Cypress was fouled to set up a long penalty kick far from the box. Alvarez took the kick and booted a strike to the top left side of the net. In an overall team win, Alvarez shined with an assist to start the scoring and a goal off a penalty kick to extend the lead.

With the final whistle blowing, the Chargers had ended the Marauders season after they had finished in first place in the Western State Southern Conference. Cypress added their 11 shutout on the season and are advancing in the postseason.

UP NEXT: Cypress is set to advance in the third round of the CCCAA Regional Playoffs and play on Tuesday, November 22. Opponent and location will be determined by Saturday night's matchup between Saddleback and Santa Monica.
