Cypress Baseball Season Ends in the Super Regionals

CYPRESS, CA- Charger baseball (26-13, 12-9 OEC) 2023 season comes to a close in the Super Regionals.

The Chargers baseball club finished an impressive season on Saturday, May 13th. Their playoff run began when they hosted the Cerro Coso Coyotes for Round One of the 3C2A SoCal playoff bracket.

Cypress was successful in the first round when they swept the Coyotes as they took the first two meetings. The first matchup was a close finish 10-8, but the final game was a blowout as the home team won 11-0.

The Chargers then traveled to Santa Ana for a double elimination event against the Dons and Santa Barbara City College. At the event, the Chargers defeated the Vaqueros in the first game, 7-2 to stay alive.

In game three of the double elimination event, Cypress went down early in the series. A 5-12 defeat put Santa Ana up a game in the elimination series. However, the visiting Chargers would push a game five when they held off and won the second game in a high scoring affair, 10-9. For the series finale, the Dons would come out on top as they knocked out Cypress, 4-15.

Though the Chargers were one win away from moving on to the last round of playoffs, there were many great accomplishments to look back on. During conference play, Cypress were successful in multiple sweeps against Irvine Valley and Fullerton College.

Ahead of playoffs, the team was ranked No. 5 in the SoCal bracket, No. 21 in the entire state and earned the right to host the first round of the 3C2A playoffs.  Head Coach Anthony Hutting's team finished fourth in the Orange Empire Conference and led the conference in many offensive statistics.

The Chargers saw five of their players make it to an All-OEC team. Outfielders Luke Honikel, Dean Toigo and pitcher Josh Landry earned first-team honors. While first baseman Aaron Perez and infielder Isaac Rodriguez made the second-team.

With a roster predominantly full of freshmen, Head Coach Hutting will have a mostly returning cast for next season. Hungry and ready to get back at a conference rival, the Chargers will look to improve upon their fruitful year in the 2024 campaign.
