IRVINE, CA – The Cypress College beach volleyball team's No. 1 pair, Khamis Berneker and Brittany Zavala, finished second in the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) Southern California Regional Pairs Tournament at Irvine Valley College on Friday. The duo will advance to the CCCAA State Pairs Championship on Friday, May 10 at the Chula Vista Elite Athlete Training Center. 

In the SoCal Regionals, No. 14 Berneker/Zavala, defeated No. 19 Ventura Gallagher/Neria (21-14, 21-10) in a two-set sweep to secure their spot in the state tournament. 

The Cypress pair then advanced to the regional final, following forfeits in the quarterfinal by No. 30 IVC Nolan/Gendale and semifinal by No. 18 IVC Unke/Griego. Berneker/Zavala fell to No. 1 Grossmont Goycoochea/Morris (22-20, 17-21, 9-15) in a hard-fought Regional Final. 

Berneker/Zavala will enter the CCCAA State Pairs Championship with a No. 2 ranking and are in Pool #2 with No. 7 Feather River Nagase/Carnes, No. 10 Long Beach Woods/Peterson, and No. 18 El Camino College K. Donatucci/Villasenor.  

The pairs pool brackets with play times can be found here. The top two pairs from each pool will advance to the quarterfinals on Saturday, May 11.
