Cypress Selects Wes McCurtis as New Athletic Director

Cypress Selects Wes McCurtis as New Athletic Director

CYPRESS, CA – Wes McCurtis has been named the new Cypress College Athletic Director, according to Cypress College Dean of Kinesiology and Athletics, Dr. Richard Rams. The appointment comes following a comprehensive national search.

"Those that know Wes describe him as a man of character and integrity who cares deeply about the student athletes he serves," Dr. Rams said. "His contributions to Cypress College and Cypress College Athletics as reflected by our Hall of Fame initiatives, marketing, and ability to cultivate successful relationships on the campus, the OEC, CCCAA, and affiliate organizations make him a terrific fit."

McCurtis, who officially began his role as the Athletic Director on August 28, was promoted after serving as the Sports Information and Marketing Representative at Cypress College for five seasons.

In addition to his normal job duties at Cypress, McCurtis serves as President-Elect for the California Community College Sports Information Association, where he provides leadership and guidance to other sports information professionals within the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA). He also served as Webmaster for the Orange Empire Conference from 2016-2019, and as the SID representative for OEC softball and women's basketball.

He earned recognition from the state (CCCAA) for his efforts, receiving the 2019 BRASS Top Award, given to the top sports information professional in California Community College Athletics.

"Being the Athletic Director at Cypress College is a dream come true," McCurtis said. "I am excited to get started. I recognize that it's a privilege to be in this position and I am looking forward to building upon our rich tradition, while continuing to provide a family-like atmosphere for the Cypress athletics community."

"I think my ability to relate to our athletes and advocate for their needs, as well as my understanding of the CCCAA and the OEC will allow me to serve Cypress College Athletics," McCurtis added. "I also have the benefit of our previous Athletic Director, Bill Pinkham, sticking around as our Associate Athletic Director to help me make this transition."

As a former student athlete, McCurtis has demonstrated the ability to create strong relationships with coaches, administrators, alumni, and students, while leading efforts like the Cypress College Athletics Hall of Fame and other special events that have helped create a strong community around athletics.

"Wes has quickly established himself as leader in CCCAA athletics and we are thrilled to have someone of Wes' caliber assume the Athletics Director position at Cypress College," Dr. Rams said.

McCurtis graduated from California Lutheran University in 2014 with a bachelor's degree in Business Administration, before earning his master's degree in Sport Management in 2016 from Long Beach State University.
