2018 Fall Student Athletes to Watch

CYPRESS, CA - The Cypress Chargers are set to open the 2018-19 season on Tuesday, August 28th as men's soccer travels to take on College of the Canyons at 7:00 pm. Check out some of the Chargers' fall student athletes to keep an eye on as their season's get underway. 

Women's Volleyball - Home Opener Sept. 5th @6:00pm

    

With one season under her belt, Penina Wilder is back and ready for action! The setter earned a spot on the All-Orange Empire Conference First-Team last year after a standout season. Wilder had 16 aces, 133 digs, and led the team with 473 assists. She finished second in the OEC, averaging a remarkable 9.27 assists per set. Also returning to CypCity is Kayla Owens. The outside hitter had a prolific first season with 261 kills on her way to an All-OEC second team selection. The Chargers finished the regular season with an 18-5 overall record and 13-3 record in Orange Empire Conference play. 

Women's Water Polo - Home Opener Sept. 12 @3:00pm

     

Playing all 27 games last season, center forward Natasha Velez, who had a shooting percentage of 81.9%, returns for her second and final season with the Chargers. Velez was instrumental in the team's success last season, scoring 104 goals on 127 shots. The center forward added 82 steals and 11 assists. Also returning for her final season is Kaylie Merrill. The goalkeeper logged 233 saves in her first season along with 20 steals and 12 assists. She played all 27 games for the Chargers. The team finished 15-11, 2-4 Orange Empire Conference earning their first postseason appearance since 2002. 

Women's Soccer - Home Opener Sept. 14 @3:00pm

   

Tabatha Macedo anchored the Charger defense last season in goal, earning her a place on the All-OEC Second Team. The goalkeeper started all 20 games last season earning herself 2 points. Also returning for the Chargers is Brianna Camacho. The midfielder played 21 games last season, where she earned herself a starting spot in all 21 matches. Camacho had one assist and four shots on goal during the season. The Lady Chargers finished second in conference with a 12-5-3 overall record and 11-2-3 record in Orange Empire Conference play. 

Men's Soccer - Home Opener Aug. 31 @3:00pm

Eric Rodriguez returns to Cypress for his sophomore year after a record setting season with 80 saves to earn him a top ten spot in the all-time single season saves category. He had a save percentage of .620%, starting 15 games and logging 1494:40 minutes. Men's soccer finished the season with a 6-13-2 overall record and 3-11 record in Orange Empire Conference play.
