SACRAMENTO, CA – The California Community College Sports Information Association (CCCSIA) announced Cypress College Sports Information Director, Wes McCurtis, as their 19th recipient of the Brass Top Award on Wednesday. He will be presented with the award at the California Community College Athletic Association's spring convention during the Honoring Our Own luncheon on Thursday, March 28, at the Hilton Hotel in Concord, CA.
The award is presented annually to someone working in the Sports Information field at the community college level, or someone working closely with members of the CCCSIA, to recognize outstanding service and accomplishments: Bringing Respect And Superior Service To Our Profession.
Wes McCurtis, who got his start as an intern in the Cypress College Athletics office, is now in his fourth year as the Sports Information Director at Cypress College, where he is responsible for the promotion and publicity of all 14 Chargers athletic teams. He has been recognized as one of the state leaders in the use of social media and the marketing of Community College Athletics with a primary focus of highlighting student athlete success.
At Cypress, Wes serves as the staff supervisor of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), a student athlete leadership group with representation from each of the colleges' athletic teams. He also supervises the athletic department's graduate level internship program, where he mentors aspiring athletics professionals on their journey to a career in sports.
In addition to his duties at Cypress, Wes serves as the webmaster and public relations representative for the Orange Empire Conference and has additional duties as the conference statistician for softball and women's basketball. He currently serves as President-Elect of the California Community College Sports Information Association (CCCSIA) and in 2018 accepted sports information related roles with Golden West College Football, Nike Basketball Academy, Adidas Summer Gauntlet, and the NBA G League's Agua Caliente Clippers. He has also worked several CCCAA events, including the basketball and softball State Championships.
Wes graduated from California Lutheran University in 2014 with a bachelor's degree in Business Administration, before earning a master's degree in Sport Management from Long Beach State in 2016. He currently resides in Huntington Beach, CA.
