Cypress Knocks Off Santiago 4-0 to Advance in the 3C2A SoCal Regionals

CYPRESS, CA - No. 6 Cypress Chargers (16-4-2, 10-3-1 OEC) defeat No. 11 Santiago Canyon Hawks (14-4-3, 10-2-2 OEC) with a 4-0 shutout in the first round of playoffs.

It was a battle of the Orange Empire Conference at Ray Haas Field between the visiting Santiago Canyon Hawks and the Cypress Chargers for the first round of the 3C2A SoCal Regionals. The Chargers were relentless at the start of the match as they pressured the ball up on the offensive end. The hustle and strong physicality was brought by each team on every possession with the ball played back-and-forth at the midfield line which resulted in a scoreless first half.

Early at the start of the second half, Cypress Freshman Jasmin Martinez dribbled the ball up the field and attacked with a long power shot towards the bottom left of the goal. The Hawks keeper missed the save and the Chargers were up 1-0.

Soon after, Cypress scored a second goal by Carisia Raygoza off a bounce from a scramble of players in the box.

The Chargers were jolted with energy from the 2-0 lead early in the second half. Abigail Morales fought her way past a defender to center the ball, and Itzel Ramirez retrieved the pass and scored the third goal of the game. Cypress was up 3-0 at the 60th minute mark until Santiago fouled the Chargers in the box. Martinez was sent to take the penalty kick for Cypress and scored the fourth and final goal of the game.

Cypress dominated in the second half with four goals to none as they took over the first round of playoffs.

UP NEXT: The Chargers advance to the second round of the 3C2A SoCal Regionals on Tuesday, November 21. Cypress will play the winner of the Long Beach City College versus Ventura College game.
