Cypress Chargers Women's Water Polo Falls to Riverside City College in Conference Opener
Chargers Struggle in Conference Opener Despite Key Highlights Against Riverside City College
CYPRESS, CA - In the Orange Empire Conference opener, the Cypress Chargers Women's Water Polo team struggled against a dominant Riverside City College, losing 21-8. Despite numerous 6-on-5 powerplay opportunities, Cypress was unable to convert, which proved to be a key factor in the game.
Cypress faced difficulty defending Riverside's fast-paced offense, often getting beat down the pool in transition. Defensively, the Chargers ran an M-drop, but it didn't hold up as they rotated goalies in an effort to contain Riverside's aggressive attack. Riverside's depth and aggressive play led to six of their players being ejected three times each, but Cypress couldn't capitalize on these opportunities.
A few standout moments for Cypress included a perfectly executed lob shot and an impressive 360-degree goal by Jillian Van Germert. Despite the loss, Van Gemert led the Chargers' offense, netting three goals alongside Karly Lepel, who also added three goals.
Cypress goalies faced relentless pressure, with Megan Lundquist making six saves in two quarters before being substituted by Marilyn Rodriguez and Jaleen Figueroa, who combined for three more saves.
UP NEXT: The Chargers will travel to Orange Coast College to face the Pirates in conference play at 3:00 pm.
