CYPRESS, CA- Cypress women's volleyball (17-8, 9-6 OEC) won over the Golden West Rustlers (11-10, 8-7 OEC) in four sets, 3-1. The Chargers hosted the Rustlers for Veterans Appreciation and Sophomore Night honoring both sides.
Entering the match with a slow start, the Chargers found themselves down by 7 points in a hurry. Rallying back, Cypress went on a tear with little response from the Rustlers. Consecutive out of play strikes by Golden West allowed the home team to creep back in. After 11 unanswered points, the Chargers used their momentum to finish the first set with a 25-20 score.
Early in the second set was a back-and-forth affair. After the fifth serve, the Chargers held their lead till the end of the second set. Freshman Jubilee Allen excelled at defensive plays and kills at the net to help Cypress extend the lead to double digits. While Golden West inched back late in the second set, the Chargers held off and took a 2-0 set lead.
After back-to-back 25-20 winning sets by the Chargers, Golden West went on a five score run to separate themselves in the third set. Cypress struggled to finish off long volleys. The Rustlers won the third set 25-17 to make the match 2-1.
Entering the fourth set, Cypress jumped out to a fast 4-0 point lead and stayed ahead. The Chargers capitalized by finishing off and tiring the Rustlers with long sets. Freshman Shayna Martinez played each set and led the team with 18 kills, 16 digs and four aces. Martinez's serves created a difficult atmosphere for the Rustlers to start a rhythm. A kill from sophomore Pasia Bontemp erupted the Cypress home court and extended the lead to double digits. The Chargers ended the night and won the last match 25-14.
UP NEXT: The Chargers next matchup is on the road at Saddleback College for their last regular season game. Match will begin at 6PM.
