No. 12 Lady Chargers Sweep Hawks in OEC Home Opener

CYPRESS, CA – The Cypress College women's volleyball team (7-2, 2-0 OEC) took care of business in their Orange Empire Conference home opener against Santiago Canyon (2-6, 0-2 OEC) on Wednesday night. The Chargers defeated the Hawks in a three set sweep (25-12, 25-19, 25-16).

The No. 12 Chargers were led by a balanced offensive attack. Freshman outside hitter Jessika Tellez finished with 10 kills and 1 assist, while fellow freshman Brittany Zavala and sophomore Khamis Berneker added 7 kills apiece. Berneker led the team with 14 assists for the night.

Cypress dominated from start to finish in the first set, defeating the Hawks 25-12.

However, Santiago managed to put up a fight in the second set. The Hawks held an 8-point lead over Cypress before the Chargers came storming back. A pair of Savannah Johnson blocks and an ace from Ashley Corona helped spark the run, as the Chargers took set two 25-19.

The Chargers kept the run going in the third set, jumping out to an early lead to put the match away.
