Women's Volleyball Starts Season 2-0 at PCC Quad

PASADENA, CA – The Cypress College women's volleyball team opened up the 2018 season on Saturday in the Pasadena City College Quad. The Lady Chargers went 2-0, first defeating host Pasadena in four sets (26-24, 23-25, 25-19, 25-19) before later sweeping San Diego Mesa in three sets (25-18, 25-22, 25-8).

The Chargers took the first set over Pasadena, 26-24, but the Lancers rallied back in the second set, 25-23. The Chargers would take the next two sets to earn a season opening win, both sets finished at 25-19. Kayla Owens led the way for Cypress with 17 points fighting out her teammate, Khamis Berneker who chipped in 14 points. Owens finished with 15 kills and 15 digs, while Berneker added 13 kills and 14 digs for Cypress.

It was much of the same for the Chargers in their second match of the day against San Diego Mesa. The duo of Owens and Berneker helped lead the way for Cypress, but it was sophomore Jane Woodward who led the team with 13 points. Woodward finished with 10 kills on 15 attempts (.667%), Owens notched 11 kills on 22 attempts (.409%), and Berneker added 8 kills on 16 attempts (.409%).

Sophomore Alisha Ormond helped anchor the Chargers' defense. Ormond finished with 11 digs along with 3 aces to help keep the Olympians at bay.

The Chargers look to keep their win streak going in their home opener scheduled for Wednesday, September 4, against the El Camino College Warriors at 6:00pm.
