No. 15 Chargers Place Third at San Diego Mesa Invitational

SAN DIEGO, CA – The Cypress College women's volleyball team (4-2) picked up two wins over the weekend at the 33rd Annual San Diego Mesa Invitational hosted by San Diego Mesa College.

The No. 15 Chargers began the weekend with a four set victory over Mt. SAC on Friday night (25-9, 25-19, 24-26, 25-21), before falling to No. 8 Grossmont in four sets on Saturday (15-25, 25-23, 20-25, 22-25). Cypress finished off the weekend with a thrilling five set victory over tournament host San Diego Mesa in the third place match ( 25-18, 27-29, 25-13, 19-25, 15-9).

Sophomore Kayla Owens had an outstanding weekend to lead the Chargers. Owens notched 50 total kills in the three matches, with a season-high 22 kills in against Mesa. She added 21 digs and seven aces on the weekend.

Sophomore middle blocker Jane Woodward added 22 total kills, to go along with 10 blocks, while freshman outside hitter Brittany Zavala made her presence felt with 11 kills, seven digs, and four aces in the third place match.

Women's volleyball will return to action on Wednesday, September 12 at 6:00 pm, when they travel to take on Mt. SAC in a non-conference rematch.
