Women’s Soccer Captures Shutout Win at Home

Cypress- The Cypress College women's soccer team (7-2, 3-2) defeated the visiting Irvine Valley Lasers (3-5-1, 1-3-1) in a 6-0 shutout on Friday afternoon.

The Chargers entered the game with an 0-2 record at home and were looking to turn things around on their home field. Cypress came out strong and dominated the time of possession in the first half. However, despite numerous chances to score the Chargers they were unable to find the back of the net in the first half.

Cypress remained in attack mode during the second half and it paid off. In the 47th minute, Gissel Avila was fouled in the box and scored on a penalty kick to give Cypress a 1-0 lead. Citaly Gomez followed up quickly with a goal in the 57th minute assisted by Daisy Hellon. The Chargers aggressiveness had finally taken its toll on the Laser defense and with a 2-0 lead Elizabeth Sanchez slotted another penalty kick for the Chargers to extend the lead 3-0. The flood gates were open and the Chargers were taking advantage of their shots on goal, adding three more goals to their total including an unassisted Kristin Avila goal (72:33), a Daisy Hellon goal assisted by Gissel Avila (81:00), and a sixth goal by Taylor Jones to put the Lasers away 6-0.

The Chargers finished the game with 17 shots on goal compared to Irvine Valley's 3 shots on goal. The Lasers keeper Herminia Verduzco did all she could for the Lasers and finished the game with 10 saves. Cypress keeper Paulina Serna finished with 3 saves of her own to secure the Charger shutout at home.

The women's soccer team is back in action on Tuesday, October 6th at 6:00 pm when they host Norco.
